Tadoba in Winter (Nov–Feb): Christmas & New Year Safari Guide 2026

Winter is Tadoba's most comfortable season and its most crowded fortnight. Official safari timings, what the cold actually feels like in an open jeep, sighting odds, and how to still get Christmas and New Year permits in 2026.

Winter is when most people picture a Tadoba trip — crisp mornings, golden afternoons, comfortable days. It's also when the reserve is at its busiest. Here's what the season actually looks like, using the forest department's own timings and fees, and how to plan around the Christmas–New Year rush.

Official winter safari timings

Tadoba's core zone reopens on 1 October after the monsoon closure. The official entry and exit times on the Tadoba–Andhari Tiger Reserve booking portal:

SeasonMorning safariEvening safari
1 Oct – 31 Oct6:00 – 10:00 AM2:30 – 6:30 PM
1 Nov – 28/29 Feb6:30 – 10:30 AM2:00 – 6:00 PM
1 Mar – 30 Apr6:00 – 10:00 AM2:30 – 6:30 PM

The later winter start is a gift: you leave the resort around 6:00 instead of 5:00. The last entry is allowed up to two hours after the scheduled time, but a late entry simply means a shorter safari — be at the gate on time.

Closed days: core gates shut every Tuesday, buffer gates every Wednesday. In December 2026 that means no core safaris on 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 December.

How cold is it, really?

Days are pleasant — mid-20s °C. Dawn is a different story. Night temperatures in December and January drop to around 10°C, and an open jeep moving at 20–30 km/h makes the first hour feel colder still.

What works:

  • Layers you can peel off by 9 AM — thermal base, fleece, windproof outer.
  • A beanie, gloves and a scarf or buff for the morning drive. Most resorts lend blankets for the jeep; ask.
  • Hand warmers if you're photographing — cold fingers miss shots.

The full list is in our Tadoba packing checklist.

What you'll see in winter

Winter isn't the peak for tiger odds — that's April to June, when shrinking waterholes pull tigers into the open (see best time to visit Tadoba). With water everywhere after the monsoon, tigers range widely, and in November the grass is still tall.

Realistic numbers:

  • Tigers: roughly 55–70% chance of at least one sighting across a four-safari trip. Odds improve through January and February as the grass dries and thins.
  • Light: the soft, low-angle light that photographers wait for — mist in the morning, gold by 4:30 PM.
  • Everything else: leopards, sloth bears, gaur herds, wild dogs, and the arrival of winter migrant birds around Tadoba lake and the reserve's waterbodies.

If the tiger is the single goal, go in summer. If you want a good chance of a tiger *and* a comfortable trip, winter is the sweet spot.

Christmas and New Year: the honest picture

The fortnight from about 20 December to 3 January is Tadoba's busiest. Three things to know for 2026:

1. The permit window has already moved. Core permits open 120 days ahead at 12:00 AM IST. Christmas Day 2026 permits went on sale on 27 August; New Year's Day permits on 3 September. Popular gates — Moharli especially — sell out quickly for these dates.

2. Anything you book now for late December is non-refundable. As of mid-October, every date from 11 December onward falls in the 60–120 day booking tier. The official fees for that tier:

BookedMon – FriSat – Sun
1–59 days ahead₹5,800 per jeep₹6,800 per jeep
60–120 days ahead₹8,800 per jeep₹12,800 per jeep

Those fees include entry, guide and gypsy, for up to six guests; cameras cost ₹250 extra at the gate. Bookings made 60–120 days out cannot be cancelled or refunded. That's the forest department's rule, not ours, so lock your travel dates before you lock permits.

3. Tatkal is the fallback, not a plan. A small quota of core permits opens at 8:00 AM IST three days before each date. It's competitive and also non-refundable. Buffer gates (Agarzari, Junona, Devada-Adegaon, Alizanza) are the realistic backup — ₹6,000 weekday or ₹7,000 weekend per jeep, with tigers regularly seen.

Resorts fill just as fast. Expect Christmas–New Year rates 40–60% above a normal winter week, and minimum-stay rules at many lodges.

Worth noting for 2026: both Christmas Day and New Year's Day fall on a Friday, so 26–27 December and 2–3 January carry weekend permit rates.

Our advice for a winter trip

  • First half of December or mid-January onwards gives you the winter weather without the holiday premium.
  • Do three nights, four safaris. Split them across two gates — typically Moharli and Kolara — so one quiet morning doesn't define the trip. Our Moharli vs Kolara comparison explains why.
  • Add Pench if you have five nights. It's at its most beautiful in winter, especially for birders — see the Tadoba + Pench Combo.

The easy version

Our three-night Tadoba packages include permits, jeeps, naturalist, resort, all meals and Nagpur transfers: Budget from ₹74,000, Mid from ₹94,000 and Luxury from ₹1,20,000, per couple. Holiday-week dates are priced on request because of the permit and resort premiums.

Send us your dates or WhatsApp us — for December, the sooner the better.
