Which Tadoba gate should you book — Moharli or Kolara? Our naturalists have run safaris from both for eight years. Here are the real trade-offs.
Of the five core-zone gates in Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, Moharli and Kolara are the two most popular — and also the two most frequently confused by first-time visitors. Travel operators often push guests toward whichever has availability rather than the gate that actually suits them.
We've run safaris out of both for eight years. Here's the honest comparison.

Pick Moharli if…
You want the "classic" Tadoba experience
Moharli is the original safari gate. The interpretation centre, large parking, restaurant, and clean washrooms are all here. For first-timers, it feels organised and reassuring.
You're travelling with elderly family or kids
Better toilets, shade, benches, and a small museum while you wait for entry. Moharli has the infrastructure; Kolara has the wilderness.
You want more resort choice
From backpacker homestays to luxury lodges like Svasara and Waghoba — almost every major property in the Tadoba ecosystem is within 10 minutes of Moharli gate.
You're booking last-minute
Because Moharli has a larger allotment per slot than Kolara, last-minute availability is typically better here. Exact counts are decided by the Forest Department seasonally.
Pick Kolara if…
You want fewer jeeps at sightings
When a tiger is spotted at Moharli, you often get 10–15 jeeps clustered. At Kolara, it's usually 4–6. Huge difference for photography and the quality of experience.
You're serious about photography
Fewer vehicles means fewer reflections on glass, less dust, less engine noise spooking cats. Most pros we host prefer Kolara's North Bhanuskhindi and Chhota Matka routes.
You want to see specific tigers
The tigress Choti Tara and her cubs have dominated the Kolara-Alizanza belt for years. Male tigers like Chhota Matka and historically Matkasur also range here. If you're coming for named tigers, ask your operator which gate matches which cat.
You're up for a slightly longer drive
Kolara's road from Nagpur via Warora is actually shorter time-wise than Moharli via Chandrapur in most seasons — counter-intuitive but true.
What almost nobody tells you
Zone rotation matters more than gate
Inside each gate, there are multiple zones. Moharli routes into Moharli, Khutwanda, and Khari zones. Kolara routes into Kolara, Bhanuskhindi, and Alizanza. The zone you get on your specific safari is decided at the gate on the day — not when you book.
Two of our most-requested routes for experienced guests:
- Moharli → Khari zone (morning): high bison density, less trafficked
- Kolara → Alizanza zone (evening): open grasslands, golden-hour photography
Gate allotment when a zone is closed
Occasionally a zone is temporarily closed (fire, flood, court order). If your booking's zone is closed, you're reallocated — but to a zone in the same gate, not a different gate. Book flexibility matters.
The morning–evening split
- Morning safaris (6:00–10:30) have better tiger-sighting odds at both gates in summer
- Evening safaris (15:00–18:30) favour Kolara in winter for dramatic light
What we recommend for most guests
For your first 3-night trip: 2 Moharli safaris + 1 Kolara safari. Best of both — the reassuring infrastructure of Moharli plus the quieter Kolara experience.
For repeat visitors or photographers: All 4 safaris at Kolara if permits allow. The quality of sightings is consistently better when jeep counts are lower.
For groups with kids under 10: All Moharli. The breaks between safaris work better when your resort is nearby and the gate has facilities.
Booking reality
Kolara sells out faster per-slot because of the smaller permit count. If you're targeting a peak weekend (Dec 25 weekend, Holi weekend, long weekends), get your Kolara permits in the first 15 minutes of the 120-day window opening at 6 AM IST.
We handle this for guests — tell us your dates and we'll secure the permit combo that actually fits your trip, not whatever's easiest to book.
