Tadoba Safari from Nagpur: Complete 2026 Guide

Nagpur is the natural starting point for a Tadoba trip. Here are the real routes, drive times, cab costs, and day-by-day itineraries for 2, 3, and 4-night plans.

Nagpur is the gateway to Tadoba. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport (NAG) is the closest major airport, and every real Tadoba itinerary starts with a car ride from Nagpur. This guide covers the routes, times, costs, and the best 2, 3, and 4-night plans departing from Nagpur in 2026.

Distance & drive times

RouteDistanceDrive timeBest gate
Nagpur → Moharli Gate140 km3 hrs 15 minMoharli core
Nagpur → Kolara Gate (via Warora)110 km2 hrs 45 minKolara core
Nagpur → Khutwanda Gate150 km3 hrs 30 minKhutwanda core

Most guests pick Kolara if they want the shortest drive and a quieter safari, or Moharli if they want maximum resort choice and best infrastructure. See our Moharli vs Kolara honest comparison to decide which suits you.

Routes from Nagpur

Route 1 — Nagpur to Moharli (via Chandrapur)

Take NH-44 south through Kamptee, then SH-266 via Chandrapur town. The last 20 km from Chandrapur to Moharli is narrow state road — drive carefully, especially after dusk. Toll: approximately ₹150 one way. Fuel for a sedan: ~₹1,100 one way.

Route 2 — Nagpur to Kolara (via Warora)

Take NH-44 south, turn off at Warora toward Chimur. This route is slightly shorter and usually 15–20 minutes faster than Moharli's. Road surface improved dramatically in 2024. Toll: ₹100. Fuel: ~₹900 one way.

Route 3 — Combined Tadoba + Pench

If you're doing both parks, Nagpur is the natural hub:

  • Nagpur → Pench (Turia Gate): 95 km, 2 hrs
  • Pench → Tadoba (Kolara): 145 km, 3 hrs 30 min
  • Tadoba → Nagpur airport: 110 km, 2 hrs 45 min

Getting to Nagpur first

Flights

Nagpur has direct connections from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Pune, and Goa. International connections via Sharjah (Air Arabia) and Doha (Qatar Airways).

Typical one-way fares (booked 30+ days ahead):

  • Mumbai → Nagpur: ₹3,500–6,500
  • Delhi → Nagpur: ₹4,500–7,500
  • Bangalore → Nagpur: ₹5,500–8,500

Trains

Nagpur Junction is a major railway hub on the Mumbai–Howrah line. Overnight trains from Mumbai (Duronto, 13hrs) and Delhi (Rajdhani, 14hrs) are comfortable and cheaper than flying — AC 2-tier: ₹2,400–3,000.

Nagpur airport pickup options

Pre-booked private cab (recommended): ₹3,500–5,000 one-way to Tadoba. Driver meets you at arrivals with a name board. Air-conditioned sedan (Dzire or equivalent) for 3 passengers + luggage.

App-based cabs: Ola and Uber run in Nagpur but outstation trips to Tadoba are rare and expensive on these apps. Not recommended for the full journey.

Shared cab to Chandrapur, then local: Cheapest option at ~₹800 per person to Chandrapur, then ₹500 private from Chandrapur to your resort. Adds 1.5 hrs to total journey. Only worth it if budget is tight.

Your own car: If driving from Mumbai, Pune, or Hyderabad, reaching Tadoba via Nagpur is 10–12 hrs from most Maharashtra cities. Parking is available at all resorts.

Suggested itineraries

2-night / 3 safari weekend (Mumbai/Delhi doable)

Day 1 (Friday):

  • 6 AM Mumbai → Nagpur flight
  • 9 AM arrival, pickup begins immediately
  • 12:30 PM reach resort, lunch, rest
  • 3 PM evening safari at Kolara Gate (first sighting chance)
  • Dinner at resort

Day 2 (Saturday):

  • 5:30 AM morning safari

Rough cost: ₹28,000–42,000 per person including flights, resort (mid-tier), all safaris, and transfers.

3-night / 5 safari classic trip

Adds an extra day either before or after, letting you mix Moharli and Kolara gates. This is the sweet spot — enough safaris to almost guarantee a tiger sighting, without travel fatigue.

Rough cost: ₹38,000–55,000 per person.

4-night Tadoba + Pench combo

Day 1–2 Pench (2 safaris), day 3 transfer + evening Tadoba safari, day 4–5 Tadoba (3 safaris), return to Nagpur. Covers both parks, no backtracking.

Rough cost: ₹52,000–72,000 per person.

When to fly/arrive for the best experience

Arrive morning if possible — most flights from major cities land by 11 AM, giving you enough time to reach your resort and join the evening safari on Day 1. An afternoon arrival means you miss that safari slot.

Avoid Tuesday arrival — Tadoba is closed every Tuesday year-round. You'd waste Day 1.

Avoid monsoon (1 July – 30 September) — core zones shut completely. Buffer zones stay open but sighting odds drop.

Nagpur stopover — worth it?

If you have half a day either side of the safari, Nagpur offers:

  • Deekshabhoomi — the Buddhist memorial where Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and thousands converted to Buddhism in 1956. 2-hour visit.
  • Ramtek — ancient fort and temples, 40 km from Nagpur. Half-day trip.
  • Khindsey Lake — boating and bird-watching, 35 km from airport. Good for families.

But honestly — most guests skip Nagpur and maximise park time. Fly in, safari, fly out.

Practical tips

  • Book airport cab in advance — cab availability at Nagpur airport after 9 PM is thin
  • ATM at airport — withdraw ₹10,000–15,000 for tips, bottled water, entry fees. Cards work at most resorts but not at gates
  • Your ID must be the same as on the safari permit — carry the original Aadhaar, passport, or driving licence you booked with
  • Layers — Nagpur can be 32°C at airport and forest can be 10°C at 6 AM morning safari. Pack a light jacket
  • Phone signal — Jio and Airtel both work inside the park. Keep phone on silent during safaris
