Tadoba Safari with Kids: Age Rules, Timings & Family Tips (2026)
Children under 8 ride free on a Tadoba safari — up to two per jeep. The official age rules, how early you really need to get up, how to keep kids happy for four hours in an open jeep, and which trip suits which age.
A tiger safari is one of the best family trips in India — and kids often spot animals before the adults do. But four hours in an open jeep, starting before sunrise, needs a little planning. Here are the official rules from the Tadoba–Andhari Tiger Reserve, and what we've learned taking families into the forest.
Can children go on a Tadoba safari?
Yes, at any age. The reserve's rule:
The reserve's rule, word for word: "Children below the age of 8 years shall be allowed entry free of charge without mention in the booking. Maximum 2 children below 8 years allowed in a single gypsy." So:
- Under 8: free, and they don't need to be on the permit. Up to two per jeep.
- 8 and older: a normal guest, named on the booking, using one of the jeep's six seats.
- ID: adults must show original photo ID; carry a copy of your child's birth certificate or passport anyway, in case age is questioned at the gate.
Because Tadoba charges per jeep, not per person, a family of four costs the same as a couple for the safari itself:
| Booked | Mon – Fri | Sat – Sun |
|---|---|---|
| 1–59 days ahead | ₹5,800 per jeep | ₹6,800 per jeep |
| 60–120 days ahead | ₹8,800 per jeep | ₹12,800 per jeep |
Those fees include entry, guide and gypsy. Cameras are ₹250 extra at the gate.
How early do you need to get up?
Official morning entry times:
| Season | Morning | Evening |
|---|---|---|
| October | 6:00 – 10:00 AM | 2:30 – 6:30 PM |
| November – February | 6:30 – 10:30 AM | 2:00 – 6:00 PM |
| March – April | 6:00 – 10:00 AM | 2:30 – 6:30 PM |
| May – June | 5:30 – 9:30 AM | 3:00 – 7:00 PM |
Add 20–30 minutes to reach the gate from your resort. With young children, November to February is the easiest season — the latest morning start, and no midday heat.
Tip: you don't have to do every safari. For kids under 6, we often suggest the evening safaris plus one morning drive — after a proper night's sleep, they enjoy it far more.
Keeping kids happy in the jeep
Four hours is long for anyone. What works:
- Give them a job. A pair of children's binoculars and a printed spotting list (tiger, leopard, sloth bear, gaur, peacock, kingfisher, langur) turns waiting into a game.
- Snacks and water in a cloth bag. No plastic is allowed inside the reserve; carry everything back out.
- Layers. Winter mornings are cold in an open jeep; summer afternoons are hot. A cap and sunscreen year-round.
- Whisper rules, explained in advance. Loud noise and disturbing animals are fineable offences — ₹5,000 under the reserve's rules — and, more practically, noise sends the tiger back into the bamboo. Kids who understand *why* are usually brilliant at being quiet.
- Toilet stop before entry. Once inside, you stay in the jeep except at designated stops.
- Ask for a family-friendly naturalist. Ours adjust the pace on family safaris — shorter circuits, more stops for the small stuff kids love (spiders, owlets, dung beetles).
Which trip suits which age?
- Under 5: keep it short. Two nights, two or three safaris, and a resort with a pool. Pench is quieter and closer to Nagpur — 95 km — which helps; see Tadoba vs Pench.
- 6–11: the sweet spot. Three nights, four safaris, with a lazy afternoon in the middle. They'll remember it for life.
- 12+: treat them like adults. Let them carry a camera; consider the summer months for the best tiger odds.
Between safaris there's plenty to fill the afternoon — see things to do in Tadoba beyond the jeep safari.
Where to stay with a family
Look for interconnecting rooms or family cottages, a pool, and a kitchen that will make plain food on request. Most importantly, stay close to your safari gate, so the dawn drive is 10 minutes, not 40.
Our family-friendly options
- Tadoba Mid — 3 Nights from ₹94,000 per couple: a luxury resort and a private 7-seater for the whole trip, so there's room for kids, car seats and bags.
- Pench Classic — 3 Nights from ₹69,000 per couple: shorter drive from Nagpur, calmer jeep traffic, superb birdlife.
- Children's pricing depends on age and room set-up, so we quote families individually.
